Male lions are one of the only big cats where the male looks noticeably different from the female, thanks to their large mane. The mane makes the lion look bigger and more impressive to rivals and signals health to potential mates — darker, fuller manes tend to belong to older, more dominant lions. Lions are the only truly social big cats and live in family groups called prides, with females doing most of the hunting.
Coloring ideas: color the mane a warm tawny brown with darker brown at the edges for depth. Color the body a golden sandy yellow. The savanna background looks striking in pale golden yellows and browns for the dry grassland, with dark grey rocks beneath the lion's paws.
For younger kids, start with the big mane shape — great for a large circular brush stroke. Older kids can add texture to the mane by drawing lines radiating outward from the face, and shade the acacia tree tops in two tones of green.
