Kangaroos are marsupials, meaning their young — called joeys — are born at a very early stage of development, about the size of a jellybean, and crawl immediately into the mother's pouch to continue growing. A joey stays in the pouch for about six to eight months. Red kangaroos, the largest species, can jump up to 9 metres in a single bound and travel at speeds of up to 70 kilometres per hour.
Coloring ideas: color the kangaroo's body a warm reddish-brown or sandy tan, with a lighter cream on the belly and inside the ears. The tiny joey can be a slightly lighter shade of the same color. Use golden yellow, dusty orange, and pale blue for the dry outback landscape in the background.
For younger kids, the large round body and big tail are perfect for bold crayon strokes. Older kids will enjoy the detail of the joey peeking out — try giving it slightly larger eyes than the adult to show it is young and curious.
