Koalas live almost exclusively in eucalyptus trees and eat almost nothing but eucalyptus leaves, which are toxic to most other animals. A koala's specialized digestive system neutralizes the poisons. They sleep up to 22 hours a day to conserve energy from their low-nutrition diet. Koalas are marsupials, not bears — joeys are born tiny and spend about six months in their mother's pouch before climbing onto her back.
Coloring ideas: color the koala's fluffy body a soft medium grey with a lighter cream or white on the chest and inner ears. The eucalyptus bark is a warm tan with darker brown streaks for texture. Color the long narrow leaves a sage or grey-green — eucalyptus leaves have a distinctive bluish-green color.
For younger kids, the large round head and body are easy to fill with grey. Older kids can try adding a subtle texture of short fur strokes over the koala's body with a slightly darker pencil, making it look genuinely fluffy.
