The International Space Station (ISS) is a large spacecraft that orbits Earth about 400 kilometres up, travelling at roughly 28,000 kilometres per hour — fast enough to complete one full orbit every 90 minutes. Sixteen countries worked together to build it, and astronauts have lived there continuously since the year 2000. Its massive solar panels span about 73 metres and generate enough electricity to power many homes.
Coloring ideas: color the main modules white or light gray, the solar panels gold or deep blue (representing silicon photovoltaic cells). Give Earth vivid blues for the oceans and greens and browns for the continents. Leave the clouds white. Stars can be scattered white or yellow dots against a dark space background.
Older kids can look up the real ISS configuration and try to match the module layout. Younger kids can practice coloring the large rectangular solar panel shapes using ruler-straight lines if they like.
