Twelve astronauts walked on the Moon during NASA's Apollo missions between 1969 and 1972. The first were Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on Apollo 11, in July 1969. The Moon's surface is covered in craters made by space rocks crashing into it over billions of years, and because the Moon has almost no air, footprints left there can last for a very long time.
Coloring ideas: spacesuits are usually white so they reflect sunlight, so leave the suit light and add color to the backpack, gloves and helmet visor (a gold or blue visor looks great). The Moon's surface works in soft grays, and you can color Earth with blue oceans and green and brown land. Choose any colors you like for the flag.
Younger kids can color the big shapes: the suit, the Moon and Earth. Older kids can shade the inside of each crater a little darker than the ground around it, or design their own mission patch for the astronaut's suit.
