Ducks are excellent swimmers thanks to waterproof feathers coated in natural oil and webbed feet that act like paddles. Ducklings can swim almost immediately after hatching and follow their mother in a line — this instinct is called imprinting, meaning ducklings bond to and follow the first moving thing they see after hatching. Most ducks make a quacking sound, though not every species does.
Coloring ideas: color the mama duck a soft brown and white with a bright orange beak and feet. The tiny ducklings look sweet in fluffy yellow. Color the pond a clear sky blue with darker blue ripple lines radiating out. The cattail stalk can be brown with dark sausage-shaped heads.
Toddlers love spotting the ducklings and counting them. Try making quacking sounds together as you color for a giggly art session!
