Hens are devoted mothers. Before eggs hatch, a hen keeps them warm by sitting on them for about 21 days — this is called incubation. Once the chicks hatch they stay close to their mother, who clucks softly to call them back if they wander too far. Baby chicks are covered in soft fluffy down at first and grow their proper feathers over the next few weeks.
Coloring ideas: color the mother hen a warm reddish-brown or golden yellow with a bright red comb on her head. The tiny chicks look adorable in soft yellow. Color the woven nest basket in warm tan and brown stripes.
Toddlers will enjoy counting the three chicks together. The round nest shape is a satisfying large area to fill with a brown crayon, and the little chicks are a fun challenge for slightly older kids.
