Scientists now know that velociraptors were covered in feathers, much like modern birds. They were about the size of a turkey — much smaller than they often appear in movies — and had a distinctive large sickle-shaped claw on the second toe of each foot, which they likely used to pin prey. Velociraptors lived about 75 million years ago in what is now Mongolia and China.
Coloring ideas: give the feathers along the arms and head a bold color like rusty orange or deep blue, similar to a hawk or eagle. Color the body a sandy brown or olive green. The fern fronds look great in two or three shades of green, from bright lime at the tips to deep forest green at the base.
Younger kids can color the big body first and skip the fern details. Older kids can try striping the feathers with a darker shade of the base color, and add shadows under each fern frond to make the scene feel lush and full.
