Parasaurolophus had one of the most recognizable features of any dinosaur: a long hollow tube of bone curving back from the top of its skull. Scientists believe this crest acted like a musical instrument — air moving through it could produce deep, resonant calls that helped the herd communicate over long distances in dense forests. Parasaurolophus lived about 76 million years ago in what is now North America.
Coloring ideas: the crest is a great place to use a bold color — try bright red or deep purple to make it stand out. Color the body a warm olive green or earthy brown. The surrounding jungle offers a chance to use many greens: lime for young leaves, dark emerald for the palm fronds, and a rich hunter green for the monstera leaves.
For younger kids, focus on the large dinosaur body and just one or two of the big leaves. Older kids will enjoy filling in the intricate jungle foliage with multiple shades of green and adding dark veins to each leaf for a realistic, detailed effect.
