Tyrannosaurus Rex Roaring Coloring Page

A powerful, detailed tyrannosaurus rex rears back with its enormous jaws wide open in a fierce roar, rows of sharp teeth visible, its tiny arms curled forward and massive legs planted in a prehistoric jungle of ferns, palm trees, and leafy ground plants.

Tyrannosaurus rex lived approximately 68 to 66 million years ago during the last stage of the Cretaceous period. T. rex had one of the strongest bites of any land animal ever known — its jaw muscles could exert a force of about 8,000 pounds, enough to crush bone. Despite its fearsome reputation, recent research suggests T. rex may have had lips covering its teeth when its mouth was closed, similar to modern monitor lizards, rather than the bare-toothed look often shown in older illustrations.

Coloring ideas: T. rex colors are a matter of imagination since soft tissues do not fossilize. Classic options include dark olive green or brown, but some scientists think large predatory dinosaurs may have had countershading — lighter on the belly and darker on the back — similar to large modern predators. Try a dark forest green back fading to tan or cream on the belly. The ferns can be two shades of green, with lighter young fronds and darker established ones.

This detailed image suits older kids who enjoy the challenge of coloring a complex subject. Younger kids can color the T. rex body one bold color and the plants another. A fun activity: research what scientists think the real colors of large theropods might have been and try to replicate the patterns.
