Triceratops and Volcano Coloring Page

A friendly triceratops with a big frilled head, three horns and a spotted back, standing in a prehistoric valley with ferns, rocks and a puffing volcano.

Triceratops lived about 68 to 66 million years ago, at the very end of the Cretaceous period, in what is now western North America. Its name means three-horned face: two long horns sat above its eyes and a shorter one on its nose, and the bony frill behind its head may have helped it show off to other triceratops or keep it safe.

Coloring ideas: real triceratops colors are unknown, so any color works. Try earthy greens and browns for a natural look, or bright oranges and purples for a storybook dinosaur. Give the spots a darker shade than the body so they stand out, and color the volcano's lava streaks orange and red.

For younger kids, start with the big shapes (the body, frill and volcano) using thick crayons. Older kids can add detail to the fern leaves and the small rocks with colored pencils.
