Garden snails carry their shell home with them everywhere they go — the shell grows along with them and cannot be removed. Snails move using a single flat muscular foot, gliding on a layer of slime they produce themselves. A snail leaves a shiny trail behind it. Snails are nocturnal, meaning they are most active at night and on cloudy or rainy days when they will not dry out in the sun.
Coloring ideas: the snail's body can be tan, golden yellow, or light brown, while the spiral shell looks fantastic in warm orange-brown with darker spiral stripes. Color the sunflower petals bright golden yellow with a dark brown center. The mushroom is classic red with white spots. The butterfly wings can each be a different pattern.
Kids can practice drawing the spiral on the snail's shell — start in the center and spiral outward. Younger children can enjoy filling in all the round pebbles on the garden path. Count how many creatures appear in the picture together.
