Dragonflies are among the fastest flying insects, reaching speeds of up to 55 kilometres per hour. They have been on Earth for more than 300 million years — even longer than the dinosaurs — and ancient dragonflies had wingspans of up to 70 centimetres. A dragonfly's two huge compound eyes cover most of its head, giving it nearly 360-degree vision to spot prey.
Coloring ideas: dragonflies come in dazzling colors — try an electric blue or vivid green body, with the wings left nearly clear with pale blue or green veins. The frog looks best in a bright lime green with darker green back markings. The lily pads are flat green circles, and the lotus flower can be pink and white. The cattails are brown and tan.
Kids can compare the dragonfly's four wings and notice how the front pair is slightly different from the rear pair. Older kids can look up a specific dragonfly species and try to match its exact body pattern and coloring.
