Round hay bales, also called round bales, are made by large farm machines that roll cut grass or straw into a tight cylinder and wrap it in netting or twine. They can weigh anywhere from 400 to 1,500 pounds, making them too heavy for a person to lift. Round baling became widespread in the 1970s and replaced the traditional rectangular bale for many large farms because one person can operate the machine. Scarecrows are placed in fields at harvest time to deter birds from eating crops.
Coloring ideas: color the hay bales a warm golden yellow with slightly darker spiral lines to show the rolled layers of straw. Give the scarecrow a plaid shirt in red and blue or orange and green, and make the overalls bright denim blue. The corn stalks can be rich green with golden-yellow ears, and the pumpkin a vivid orange. Add a bright blue sky behind everything with fluffy white clouds.
Younger kids can color each big section one solid color. Older kids can try drawing spiral lines on the hay bales with a brown or dark yellow crayon to emphasize the round rolled shape before filling it in.
