Sunflowers are native to North America and were grown by Indigenous peoples for thousands of years as a food source. Each sunflower head is not a single flower but a cluster of hundreds of tiny flowers called florets. The outer ring of yellow petals attracts pollinators, while the dark center contains the individual seeds that ripen into sunflower seeds we can eat. Apples and squash are both autumn harvests that reach their peak in the same season as sunflowers go to seed.
Coloring ideas: color the basket a warm golden tan or light brown with darker lines showing the woven pattern. Give the apples rich red with a hint of green near their stems. The squash can be yellow or pale green, and the pumpkins bright orange. The sunflower petals can be bright yellow or deep gold with a dark brown or black center disc.
For younger kids, the big round basket shape is an easy starting point. Older kids can practice coloring the diagonal weave pattern of the basket in alternating light and slightly darker tan to give it a three-dimensional woven texture.
