Sailing boats use the wind to move through the water by angling their sails to catch and redirect the wind's force. Sailors can actually travel at an angle into the wind by tacking — zigzagging back and forth — which lets a sailboat travel in almost any direction. Wooden sailboats have been used for fishing and exploration for thousands of years.
Coloring ideas: make the hull a warm wooden brown or a bold white. The sails catch great wind color contrasts — try cream white on one sail and navy blue or red on another. The ocean waves look beautiful in layers of teal, aqua, and deep blue. Give the seagull white and gray wings.
Kids can try shading the underside of each wave a darker blue than the top to create a rolling water effect. Younger children can concentrate on the big sail triangles while older kids add detail to the rope rigging lines.
