An excavator is a digging machine built around three main parts: a cab that can rotate in a full circle, a long arm called a boom and stick, and a bucket with teeth for biting into soil. Tracked excavators like this one roll on continuous steel or rubber tracks instead of wheels, which spreads their weight so they don't sink into soft ground. Their arms move using hydraulics, where pressurized fluid pushes pistons to lift heavy loads.
Coloring ideas: construction machines are often painted bright yellow or orange so other workers can see them easily, so that's a classic choice. Use dark gray or black for the tracks, a lighter gray for the steel bucket, and brown shades for the dirt pile. The traffic cone can be orange with white stripes.
For younger kids, color the big shapes first: the cab, the arm and the tracks. Older kids can add detail to every track link and the hydraulic pistons, or draw a dump truck waiting nearby to collect the dirt.
