Sunflower Field Coloring Page

Rows of tall sunflowers with large detailed flower heads and broad leaves fill the scene, while a bee hovers in the center, a bright sun shines overhead, and a farmhouse sits on the horizon.

Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) are native to North America and were first cultivated by Indigenous peoples thousands of years ago for food and oil. Young sunflowers are heliotropic — they track the sun from east to west during the day — but once they reach full bloom they fix in place facing east to attract pollinators in the morning warmth. A single sunflower head is actually made up of up to 2,000 tiny individual flowers called florets, arranged in a precise spiral pattern following the Fibonacci sequence.

Coloring ideas: give the large front flower heads golden yellow petals and a rich dark brown center. Vary the green shades of the leaves — lighter yellow-green near the tips and darker forest green at the base. Color the bee in classic yellow and black stripes, and make the sky a bright summer blue with puffy white clouds.

For a challenge, try coloring the spiraling seed pattern in the center of the front sunflower using two alternating brown shades. Younger kids can focus on just the two or three foreground flowers with thick crayons and leave the background rows in a single green tone.
