Scarecrow in a Cornfield Coloring Page

A friendly scarecrow wearing a flower-decorated floppy hat and patched denim overalls spreads its straw-stuffed arms wide in a tall cornfield, with two crows perched on its arms and a third on a nearby fence post, all beneath a smiling sun.

Scarecrows have been used by farmers for thousands of years to protect crops from birds. Ancient Egyptians made scarecrows from wooden frames draped with nets along the Nile River. The tradition spread to Greece, then Europe, and eventually worldwide. In Japan, traditional scarecrows called kakashi were dressed in old clothes and hats and carried a bow and arrow to look more threatening to crows.

Coloring ideas: dress the scarecrow in warm autumn colors — give the hat a tan or golden brown, the shirt a plaid pattern of red and blue, and the overalls denim blue. Color the straw poking out of the cuffs and collar bright yellow. The corn stalks look great in shades of green with yellow-gold ears. The crows can be charcoal black with dark blue sheen on their wings.

Younger kids can color each section of the scarecrow a different solid color. Older kids can try drawing a plaid grid pattern on the shirt before coloring it in, or add cross-hatch shading to the hat brim for a woven straw texture.
