Friendly Bat Hanging Upside Down Coloring Page

A round, adorable bat grips a leafy tree branch with its tiny feet and hangs upside down, its wings folded neatly around its fuzzy body, while a crescent moon and a trio of outlined stars shine in the background.

Bats are the only mammals in the world capable of true powered flight. They sleep during the day by hanging upside down — this lets them take off quickly by simply releasing their grip and falling into a glide. Most bats use echolocation, sending out high-pitched sound pulses and listening for the echoes bouncing back from objects, which helps them navigate and catch insects perfectly in complete darkness.

Coloring ideas: give the bat a warm brown or dark grey body and color the wing membranes a slightly lighter shade so the detail lines show through. The crescent moon looks great in soft gold or pale yellow, and the stars can be bright white or cream. Try adding a soft blue tint to the white background in the sky area to suggest a moonlit night — watercolor pencils work well for this.

For young kids, the bat's round body is a nice large shape to color in. Older kids can practice adding texture by coloring the wing membranes in two slightly different shades and giving the branch a bark-like pattern of alternating light and dark brown stripes.
