Cats were associated with Halloween and witchcraft in medieval Europe, and black cats in particular became symbols of mystery and magic. In reality, domestic cats have excellent night vision — their eyes have a reflective layer called the tapetum lucidum that lets them see in very low light. Cats were also historically valued for keeping mice away from grain stores during harvest season, which is why they often appear in autumn folklore.
Coloring ideas: color the cat jet black for a classic look, or choose a warm orange tabby to match the pumpkin. Give the pumpkin bright orange ribs and color the carved mouth and eye openings a deep black or dark grey. The scattered stars can be colored gold or yellow, and the small leaves at the base can be red, orange, and brown for an autumn feel.
This image works well for all ages. Young children can focus on coloring just the cat and the pumpkin with two simple colors. Older kids can add whisker details with a white crayon or gel pen over darker areas and try to blend shades on the curved pumpkin sections to show its round shape.
