Penguins are flightless birds that have adapted perfectly to life in cold oceans. Most species live in the Southern Hemisphere, with the largest — the Emperor penguin — standing nearly four feet tall and living in Antarctica. Their black-and-white coloring acts as camouflage: seen from above, their dark back blends into the ocean; seen from below, their white belly matches the bright sky. Penguins are excellent swimmers and can reach speeds of up to 15 mph underwater.
Coloring ideas: color the penguin's back and head black, its belly white, and its beak and feet orange-yellow — just like a real penguin. The iceberg can be shades of icy blue-white, and the ocean a deep navy or teal. Make the snowflakes bright white against a pale blue background for a wintry look.
For a fun activity, count all the snowflakes in the picture before you color them. Young kids can use chunky crayons for the large areas; older kids can add tiny dots of blue shading to make the iceberg look frosty.
