Owls are nocturnal birds of prey with large forward-facing eyes that give them excellent night vision. Unlike most birds, an owl cannot move its eyeballs — instead it can rotate its head up to 270 degrees to look in different directions. A group of owls is called a parliament. Baby owls are called owlets, and both parents typically help raise them.
Coloring ideas: give the parent owls warm brown and tan feathers with white facial discs. The owlets can be softer and fluffier-looking in pale gray or creamy white down. The tree bark is rich brown with lighter tan patches. Make the crescent moon and stars a warm golden yellow against a deep navy blue or purple night sky.
Kids can practice drawing feather patterns on the owls' wings using short curved lines. Younger children can fill in the round facial disc shapes on each owl. Older kids can add a full forest background with more trees fading into the dark night.
