Hedgehogs are native to Europe, Asia, and Africa and are not found in the wild in North America. In autumn they eat as much as possible to build up fat reserves and then enter hibernation — a deep sleep that can last from October to April. During hibernation their heart rate drops from around 190 beats per minute to just 20, and their body temperature falls close to the surrounding air temperature. Wild hedgehogs often make their hibernation nests inside piles of fallen leaves.
Coloring ideas: hedgehogs have pale cream faces and undersides with brownish-grey spines tipped in cream. The spines on its back can be colored in alternating light and dark brown stripes. Give the autumn leaves around it warm reds, oranges, and golden yellows. The spotted mushroom looks great with a bright red cap and white spots, while the taller mushrooms can be tan or brown.
Younger kids can color the hedgehog's round body a simple brown and then tackle the scattered leaves one at a time. Older kids can try adding tiny parallel lines inside the spine shapes to give them texture before filling them in.
