Autumn Leaves Falling Around a Tree Coloring Page

A majestic bare tree with a thick twisted trunk, wide-spreading branches and exposed surface roots stands tall while dozens of autumn leaves — maple, oak, birch, and more — swirl and drift through the air around it, collecting in a colorful pile at the base.

Deciduous trees shed their leaves every autumn as days get shorter and temperatures drop. In preparation, the tree cuts off water and nutrients to each leaf, causing the green chlorophyll to break down. As the green fades, other pigments — yellow and orange xanthophylls that were always there, and new red anthocyanins produced in autumn — become visible. This is why a single tree can show multiple colors at once during peak fall foliage season.

Coloring ideas: each leaf shape can get its own autumn color — try deep red for the maples, gold for the birch-shaped leaves, and orange-brown for the oak leaves. The tree trunk and branches can be a warm grey-brown, slightly darker on the shaded underside of branches. The pile of leaves at the bottom can show all the colors mixed together. Leave the sky area white or add a very light blue wash if using watercolor pencils.

For younger kids, pick just 3 colors — orange, red, and yellow — and alternate them across the leaves for a simple but striking autumn look. Older kids can try to make each leaf a slightly different shade, creating a rich gradient of autumn color.
