Apples are one of the most widely cultivated fruits in the world, with more than 7,500 known varieties. They originated in the mountains of Central Asia, where wild apple trees still grow today. Apple picking by hand is necessary for the highest quality fruit because machines can bruise delicate apples. The ideal apple picking season in the northern hemisphere runs from late August through October, depending on the variety — earlier for sweet summer apples, later for crisp keeping varieties like Fuji and Granny Smith.
Coloring ideas: color the apples a mix of bright red and golden yellow — some trees produce both! Give the leaves a lush summer green since the apples are ripe, not yet fallen. The wooden ladder can be a warm honey tan. Color the wicker basket a golden brown with slightly darker weave lines, and make the farmhouse in the distance a cheerful white with a red roof.
Younger kids can simply color all the apples red and all the leaves green — a classic and satisfying combination. Older kids can practice giving depth to the round apple shapes by adding a slightly lighter circular highlight spot on each one to suggest shine.
