Ocean Animals

Whale and Calf Coloring Page

A massive humpback whale swims just below the ocean surface with its broad tail fluke raised above the waves, while a much smaller calf glides alongside it in the same direction.

Humpback whales are famous for their haunting songs — males produce long complex sequences of sounds that can last up to 20 minutes and travel hundreds of kilometres underwater. They are among the largest animals on Earth, reaching up to 16 metres long and 30 tonnes, yet they eat some of the smallest creatures: tiny shrimp-like krill and small fish, scooped up in enormous gulps of water filtered through their baleen plates. Calves drink their mother's rich milk and gain up to 45 kilograms per day.

Coloring ideas: color the whale's upper body a dark blue-grey and the underside a lighter cream or pale grey. The distinctive bumps along the head and the long white pectoral fins can be colored white. The small calf should be a slightly lighter version of the adult. Color the ocean surface waves in layers of blue.

For younger kids, the large simple body shapes of both whales are satisfying to fill. Older kids can look up reference pictures of humpback whale markings and try to recreate the unique white patterns on the tail fluke.
