Sea turtles have existed for more than 100 million years — they swam through oceans when dinosaurs walked the Earth. They use their large flat flippers to steer through the water with surprising grace and can hold their breath for up to 7 hours when resting. Sea turtles migrate thousands of kilometres between feeding grounds and the beaches where they were born to lay their own eggs — they navigate using Earth's magnetic field like a built-in compass.
Coloring ideas: color the shell's large sections a warm olive green or brown, with the borders between sections a darker brown. Color the spotted skin on the flippers and head a mix of olive and yellow-green. The coral reef below is a great opportunity to use many colors — pinks, purples, oranges, and yellows for the corals, and bright blue for the water.
For younger kids, the big oval shell shape is the star — fill it with a green or brown crayon. Older kids can color each individual section of the shell a slightly different shade, and try to identify the different types of coral in the reef below.
