Reindeer are real animals, also called caribou, that live in cold regions of northern Europe, Asia, and North America. They are the only deer species in which both males and females grow antlers. Reindeer have special hooves with a hard outer ring for walking on ice and a soft inner pad for gripping snow, which helps them travel great distances in winter. Their noses contain many tiny blood vessels that warm incoming cold air before it reaches their lungs.
Coloring ideas: reindeer have a warm brown coat in summer that turns lighter grey-brown in winter. Give the body a warm tan or golden brown and the belly a slightly lighter shade. The scarf can be any festive colors — try alternating red and white or green and gold stripes. Color the jingle bells silver or gold, and give each ornament on the antlers a different bright color.
Younger kids can color the large body area first and then move to the scarf. Older kids can add a pattern to the scarf's zigzag or stripe sections to make it look hand-knitted, and try making each bell a slightly different shade of gold.
