The idea of a princess who fights as a knight combines two classic story archetypes. In real medieval history, a small number of women did fight in armor — Joan of Arc, born in France in 1412, is the most famous example, leading armies into battle in her teens. Horses used in battle were trained to stay calm under the noise and chaos of combat, and were sometimes armored themselves.
Coloring ideas: color the princess's armor silver with gold decorative trim and flower or vine engravings on the breastplate. The horse can be white, chestnut brown, or dapple gray. The cape and banner streaming behind can be vivid crimson, royal purple, or sky blue. Add the castle in the background in cool gray stone tones.
Kids can design their own heraldic symbol for the banner — a lion, a star, or a flower all make good choices. Older kids can add detail to the armor joints and horse saddle stitching for a more realistic look.
