Medieval castles were built as fortresses and homes for lords and knights in Europe from about the 9th to the 16th centuries. Key defensive features included thick stone walls, towers for archers, a drawbridge that could be raised to block entry, and a portcullis — a heavy iron gate that could drop quickly to block attackers. The largest castles could house hundreds of soldiers, servants, and animals.
Coloring ideas: color the stone walls in medium gray with slightly darker gray outlines for individual stone blocks. Each tower can have a different colored flag — red, blue, purple, and gold. The moat water looks great in dark teal or blue-green. Make the pointed conical tower roofs deep burgundy red or slate gray.
Kids can invent a kingdom name and design a royal crest for the center flag. Younger children can start with the large rectangular wall section, then add the towers. Older kids can add tiny archers peeking from the battlements.
