The number one is the first counting number and the foundation of all other numbers. In many cultures around the world, the number one symbolizes beginnings, unity, and uniqueness. Our sun is the star at the center of our solar system and the only star close enough to appear as a disk rather than a point of light. The sun is about 93 million miles from Earth, and its light takes approximately 8 minutes and 20 seconds to reach us. It is so large that about 1.3 million Earths could fit inside it. The rays around the sun in this picture represent the light and warmth the sun sends in all directions — all life on Earth depends on this energy.
Coloring ideas: color the big number 1 in a bright solid color — bold red, royal blue, or deep green all look great. Give the sun a warm golden yellow center circle with bright orange or amber rays radiating outward. The sun's smiley face can have black dot eyes and a curved smile line.
Count the sun's rays together with your toddler before coloring: 'One, two, three...' Then point to the number and say 'One sun! One!' Connecting the numeral to the quantity of objects (one sun) is a key early numeracy skill. After coloring, ask 'How many suns do you see?' to reinforce the concept.
